Katherine Grainger is a former British rower and current chair for UK sport. The 44 year-old, born on 12th November 1975, is a well known author in the UK as well as a motivational speaker and olympic gold medalist.
She has taken part in and led a large amount of charity work. Katherine Grainger is also known for her public speaking and books in the biography genre. Her most popular books are Dreams Do Come True and Katherine Grainger: The Autobiography, published in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Katherine Grainger Personal History
In 1975, in Glasgow, Katherine was born, she went to Bearsden Academy in Dumbartonshire within Glasgow. Later, her family moved to Aberdeenshire in Netherley. She then attended the University of Edinburgh where she gained a Bachelor of Law degree, after this she attended the University of Glasgow, where she got a Master of Philosophy in Medical Ethics and Medical Law. In addition to this she went to King’s College London and achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in law. In 2013, King’s college made Katherine a fellow, this was all alongside her olympic career.
Katherine Grainger Professional Career
In 1993, Grainger began rowing at the University in Edinburgh, she represented Marlow Rowing club and/or the boat club for Edinburgh’s St Andrew in rowing events. She began training on the River Dee. In 2000, in the quadruple sculls for women, Katherine won silver place at Sydney. In 2004, four years after in 2004, she again won silver when competing at the coxless pairs. In 2008, in Beijing she then competed again in the quadruple sculls and won silver for the third time. She then won a gold medal in 2012 at the London olympics.
When competing at the World Championships she won 8 medals, gold, silver and bronze. For several years Katherine has come first in the rowing world cup in both the quadruple and double sculls. In 2017, Katherine Grainger became the chair for UK Sport. Then in 2015, she became Oxford Brookes University fourth chancellor.
Furthermore, Katherine has taken part in a lot of charity work including being a serving member for the board of international inspiration, which is a charity promoting access to physical exercise, play and sport for middle and low income families with young children across the world. This is the first international initiative for a development lagecay that has linked to the paralympic or olympic games. In 2014, at the yearly Koestler Trust exhibition, Grainger judged one of the categories which showcased art work from ex-offenders, detainees and prisoners.
In addition, Katherine is an author, the first book she wrote was named Dreams Do Come True, published in 2013. One of Katherines life goals was to win an olympic gold medal and in London in 2012 at the age of 36, she was awarded a gold medal whilst competing at the women’s double sculls. Katherine has lived a remarkable life and this book highlights that hard work and dedication truly do pay off. She is highly intelligent and athletic, her sporting career and education has made her a sought after motivational speaker and media celebrity. This autobiography tells her story, the lows and the highs and her glorious moment at the olympics in front of her fans.
Her second book was named Katherine Grainger: My Autobiography, published in 2014. Katherine has won the most olympic medals out of any female British athlete along with McKane Godfree who has also won five medals. Katherine has lived a remarkable life and this book tells it all. She is a very in demand motivational speaker. The book tells the story about her life after the London olympics, back to training, finding a new rowing partner and her attempt to qualify for the 2016 olympics, as well as how she was awarded another silver medal.
