Iyanla Vanzant was born Rhonda Eva Harris in September 13, 1953. She is an American television personality, life coach, lawyer and inspirational speaker. Iyanla is also a well known author and spiritual teacher. Her most popular books are; Peace From Broken Pieces: How to Get Through What You’re Going Through, published in 2011 and In the Meantime, published in 1999. Iyanla has made appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and has hosted her own show, Iyanla: Fix My Life.

Iyanla Vanzant Personal History
Iyanla was born in September, 1953, in New York in the back of a taxi, she was originally named Rhonda Eva Harris. Her parents are Horace Harris and Sarah Jefferson. Growing up, she did not see much of her dad and was raised by other relatives, as her mother died from breast cancer when she was two. She then did not have the best childcare with a traumatic event occurring. In 1980, she then left her abusive husband, they have three children together.
Then Iyanla was given the title of Iyanla meaning great mother in 1983 after being made a priestess in the tradition of Yoruba. She went to Medgar Evers College and then Virginia Union University. Also, from the City University of New york School of Law she has a Juris Doctor degree. As well as a masters degree from Santa Monica university. Currently, Vanzant lives in Maryland and is a New Thought minister.
Vanzant is a member of the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha. On Christmas in 2003, Vanzant’s daughter died from colon cancer. In 2007, Vanzant got a divorce from her husband.

In 2000, Iyanla was named in the “100 most influential Black Americans” according to Ebony magazine, stating her television appearances, lectures and books have helped create healthy relationships. Vanzant was listed at number 7 for being spiritually influential according to Watkins’ magazine’s list in 2012. Then, in 2014, she became the co-speaker on Oprah’s weekend tour, the Life You Want, this travelled to 8 cities, other people who featured included; Rob Bell, Elizabeth Gilbert, Mark Nepo and Deepak Chopra. In 2016, she was named on Oprah Winfrey’s list of influential leaders and visionaries.
Iyanla has written several books including; Peace From Broken Pieces: How to Get Through What You’re Going Through, published in 2011. It is a New York Times bestseller. This searching and honest book recounts Iyanla’s human journey and discusses the topic of moving away from your broken pieces and trying to turn that pain into peace. It may have seemed that Iyanla became successful overnight but little did everyone know that it felt like around her, her world was crumbling. It is partly a personal chronicle and partly a teaching story, it tells stories of death, life, daughters, mothers, work, love, money and men.
She has had a life of ups and downs, especially in her personal life and her commitment to God helped her get through these times.
Iyanla’s journey starts from being desperate, damaged and broken, to offering her knowledge to help others in their own personal situations. Often what you need to learn can be reflected in your own relationships. The book helps you to understand any pathologies and patterns that families pass through generations unconsciously.
