Charles Duhigg Personal History
Charles Duhigg is American born and bred, living his early years in New Mexico, with his family. After a relatively normal childhood, Charles went on to attend Yale University in 1993. The academically gifted author graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in History in 1997.
Following this, 4 years later the now successful podcast host and influential speaker enrolled in Harvard Business School in 2001. He graduated two years later in 2003, with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
After graduating, the business minded academic went on to be involved in a series of businesses as well as writing. But something was missing for Charles. He began researching productivity and determined the best way to understand this more was to chat to highly productive people. He started by emailing an influential author who he admired, called Atul Gawande.
Charles Duhigg started his journey into self-help writer and motivational speaker after his first interaction with this expert. The reason behind this being Atul had let Charles know he was busy with other commitments instead of meeting with him to talk about the topic. Understanding this, Charles accepted it and continued work. Later Charles learnt that the ‘commitments’ he was busy with were indeed a family trip and a dinner with his wife.
After hearing about this, Charles who at the time worked 7 days a week, understood that productivity was key, and knowing the secrets of experts like Atul he could not only change his own life but those around him, and later millions of others! Nowadays, Charles Duhigg lives in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and children.
Charles Duhigg Professional Career
After achieving his MBA and understanding the key principles of productivity from businessman and productivity guru Atul Gawande, Charles kicked off his career writing for the New York Times, where he stayed for just over a decade! At which point he won the Pulitzer prize for Explanatory Reporting for a series of 10 articles he wrote for the New York Times in 2013.
Charles also worked for the Los Angeles Times for a short period of time. Nowadays he writes for the New York Times Magazine on a freelance basis.
In addition to his success as a journalist, he is most known for his two New York Times bestselling books. The first of which being the Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business which was published in 2012. This book argues that the key to getting everything done you want to in life, whether that’s losing weight or building a business, can be achieved by understanding and learning about habits. This book spent 3 years on the New York Times bestseller list.
The second of Charles Duhigg’s books is called Smarter Faster Better: The Secrets of Being Productive in Life and Business and was published in 2016. His second New York Times bestselling novel digs deeper into the science of productivity and the power of thoughts.
