Richard Bandler Personal History

Richard Bandler was born in New Jersey, United States, and lived there for 5 years before moving with his parents to California as well as numerous other places. This was until his parents divorced. Richard largely stayed with his mother, who was based in the San Francisco area of California.

It was here he attended college at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He studied philosophy and psychology and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1973. Following this he enrolled at Lone Mountain College in San Francisco, studying psychology, graduating in 1975 with a Master of Arts.

Following graduation, Richard was committed to his career as his main focus. The only dispute came when his was accused of murder of his friends former girlfriend and his current student in 1986. He went on to be found not-guilty in the legal case and the death still remains unsolved.

Richard Bandler  Professional career

During Richard Bandler’s early career he was often associated with Robert Spitzer and his works publishing The Gestalt Approach (1973) based on work of the late Fritz Perls (died 1970). He went on to form a close professional relationship with John Grinder, his professor at the time. They began to discuss ideas of transformational grammar and linguistics, in turn setting up a therapist training group at the University. This was where his specialisation of linguistics in the realm of psychology began. Richard then went on to study the representational systems used in language and published his first book along with aforementioned John Grinder, called The Structure of Magic 1.

Following this publication, the pair of authors were then introduced to Milton Erickson. Together the trio published the foundations of Neuro-linguistic programming (NPL). It was also then that The Structure of Magic 2 was published by the original duo. For years, Richard Bandler and John Grinder tussled for the theory’s ownership of NPL in a legal case, however eventually the both agreed to drop the case and acknowledge the role both parties played in the theory’s creation.

Neuro-linguistic programming is a language and behaviour base technique focusing on self-help. It enlightens it’s patients to understand which behaviours achieve certain desired outcomes. This enriches personal communication skills in terms accounting for improved social interaction. Practicing NLP has been shown beneficial in relieving some mental illness related symptoms in conditions such as anxiety, depression, phobias and cognitive impairments.

Over the course of his extensive career Richard Bandler has published a large number of books and academic writings. As his career developed, his work has concentrated solely on NPL and its sister theories. He has developed these concepts as a consultant, public speaking, author and publisher, in term benefiting individuals looking to boost sales and seek life improvements.

Richard Bandler Teaching and Events

In addition to the publication of several books, he is author of many pieces of academic writing. In his more recent years, these have largely been focused on submodels and applications of NPL. These pieces of work highlight how your sensory experience and internal representations are able to be divided by subtle distinctions.

Still, to this day, Richard Bandler gives seminars and lectures around his NLP, his specialism over decades of study. These lecturers are primarily based in America and are sometimes taught alongside other co-founders of the theory. More recently, themes of the talks have been ‘The Power of Hypnosis’ and ‘Get The Life You Want’, where he discussed ideas of mantras such as ‘When you are ready to stop waiting and start doing’.

On top of all of his academic work and vast number of professional and personal relationships over his lifetime, he is not only a creative genius but is very well known for being quite the comedian. His sense of humour is something that is often referred to! Further to his humour he has also been described as having a dynamic training style and his gift of sophisticated language patterns.
