Paul McKenna, born Paul William McKenna, is an industry leading hypnotist and public speaker. The 56 year-old, born on November 8th 1963, is also a popular British author as well as being a behavioural scientist and well known presenter.
He is most known for his hypnosis shows and presentations as well as published books in the alternative wellness genre. His most popular books are I can make you thin and Change Your Life in 7 Days, published in 1998 and 2004 respectively. Paul holds a PhD and has sold over 7 million copies of his 25 books, which have been translated into 32 languages.

Paul McKenna Personal History
Paul McKenna is British, living his early years in London, with his father William Joseph McKenna, his mother Joan Brenda McKenna and younger brother John McKenna. His father owned a building contracting company, which his brother John took over in later years. His mother was a lecturer at Middlesex University who also worked for the London Regional Education Board as a chief examiner.
He went to St Ignatius College in London and then East Hertfordshire College. He gained a Doctor of Philosophy by Explication in 2003, which was accredited to him by the International Management Centres Association. Throughout his PhD he studied Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and how it’s ‘fixed action patterns’ help determine behaviour. This is published work which is still accessible today.
In his more ‘personal life’, Paul went on to marry Katherine Jane Davey in 2016, after knowing her for a long time. She was actually his PA for 15 years. The couple are now living in London.
Paul McKenna Professional Career
Paul McKenna’s career started at a young age, 16 to be exact. He began hosting radio shows, eventually working for well respected radio stations such as BBC Radio 1 and Capital Radio. One day a guest appeared on one of his shows who specialised in hypnotism.
Hypnotism was brought to the forefront of his interests, firstly from a self-help and development aspect, but then later he realised there was also an entertainment aspect involved. When he worked for Capital Radio specifically, there were reports of him ‘testing’ small hypnosis experiments… Following this, he performed at the duke of York’s Theatre leading him to perform on stages across the globe.
In the meantime, in addition to radio and theatre performances Paul also presented a number of TV show’s in his name. The most famous of which being The Hypnotic World of Paul McKenna (1993-1997). In amongst all this, he studied hypnosis and NLP on an academic level with popular psychologist Richard Bandler.
Some of his more recent research involves the theory of Havening which relies on Amygdala Depotentiation. He researches this topic with it’s founder Ronald Ruden, and also regularly presents on it’s ideas. In recent years, he has also focused on its affect in relation to PTSD, and pain control patients. In an academic space, Paul McKenna is also President of the UK Psychological Trauma Society at Kings College London.
In a showbiz world, Paul has become a popular figure amongst celebrities. He holds 1:1 hypnotherapy courses to allow them to face their fears and kick their bad habits. David Walliams credits him for swimming the English Channel, and Ellen DeGeneres credits him for quitting smoking.

Aside from high profile celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres and David Walliams, he has helped thousands of regular people kick bad habits and lose weight through hypnosis. Even now, Paul McKenna gives lectures and seminars around his practice of hypnosis. These seminars are mainly based in the UK. Occasionally he will also give talks on NLP specifically, which are often taught alongside other co-founders of the theory. In more recent years, the main topics of his talks have been ‘Change Your Life’, ‘Get HAPPY Get RICH’ and ‘The Power of Hypnosis’.
