Brené Brown, born Casandra Brené Brown, is an accomplished professor and motivational TV personality. The 54 year-old, born on November 18th 1965, is a well known American author as well as a podcast host and self-help guru.

She is most known for her influential speaking and books in the genre of self-help. Her most well known books are Daring Greatly and Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts, published in 2012 and 2018 respectively. Brené was also recognised by Houston Woman Magazine as the city’s most influential woman in 2009.

Brené Brown Personal History

Brené Brown is American born and bred, living her early years in San Antonio, Texas, with her parents. Her father Charles Arthur Brown and her mother Casandra Deanne Rogers baptised her as a Catholic in the Episcopal church and went on to raise her as a Catholic. Her family then moved away from Texas to New Orleans where she decided to leave the family church.

The now successful presenter, producer and author completed high school and went on to study social work at the University of Texas, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work in 1995. Following graduation from her bachelor’s degree, Brené went on to study a Master’s of Social Work in which she graduated from the University of Texas for a second time a year later in 1996. 6 years later in 2002, the academic went on to complete her PhD in social work, this time from the University of Houston.

Back in her personal life, Brené Brown is in a long term relationship with Steve Alley, who she married in 1994. The couple live in Houston, Texas with their two children, Ellen and Charlie.

Following graduation from the University of Houston, Brené’s research and professional passion surrounded ideas of leadership and authenticity to yourself and those around you. Following her budding career as an author, the academic went on to give several TED talks on similar topics.

Over the course of her career, she has written 9 books in total, with 5 of these becoming New York Times bestsellers! This expert has had an unprecedented amount of success over her 15+ year long career as an author. Her first book was published in 2007, titled I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn’t): Telling the truth about perfectionism, inadequacy and power. Following this, she went on to publish Connections in 2009, The Gifts of Imperfection in 2010 and Daring Greatly in 2012.

After these novels were well received, the successful writer hit a gold mine with her next 3 books. These books include: Rising Strong, Braving the Wilderness and Dare to Lead.

This TV documentary is her most famous and arguably most successful aspect of her career with more than 38 million views. Additionally, her TED talk on the same topic has had a similar level of success off the back of the Netflix special.

Following the success of her 9 novels, Netflix documentary and TED talks, she published her most recent book in 2020 titled The Gifts of Imperfection.

Throughout her career, Brené Brown has achieved a range of awards and recognitions, one of the most notable was being named Houston Woman Magazine’s most influential woman in 2009. In addition to this, she has also received academic awards such as Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work’s Outstanding Faculty Award.

Her academic contributions are substantial with her extensive training grounded in her own research given to social work students at the Houston Graduate College of Social Work thanks to a $2 million dollar pledge from the Huffington Foundation. At this school she also holds an Endowed Chair. She is also a guest professor at McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, where she lectures in management.

Another achievement the successful author and podcast host has achieved is talking to Oprah Winfrey on Super Soul Sunday about one of her newer books at the time, Daring Greatly.
