Malcolm Gladwell Personal History
Malcolm Gladwell is an English-born Canadian. He was born in Hampshire, England, to his mother Joyce who was a Jamaican psychotherapist and his father Graham, who was a maths professor. Throughout his early years, he lived in rural Canada, then the family moved to Elmira in Ontario, Canada.
It was noted by his family that even in his earliest years he was ambitious and ‘single-minded’. He would often tag along with his father to the University of Waterloo, as early as 11, due to his increasing interest in books and reading.
After graduating from Ontario High School, Malcolm went on to study History at the University of Toronto, Trinity College, where after interning with the National Journalism Center in Washington, DC, he graduated in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree.
Returning to his personal life, Malcolm was raised as a Christian. Whilst attending high school, he was an extremely talented athlete. Being among Canada’s fastest teenagers in a 1500 metre race, he competed at a national level.
Malcolm Gladwell Professional Career
Malcolm Gladwell’s professional career began in 1987 when he began working for the infamous Washington Post. He started covering news related to science and business and went on to work for the company for nearly a decade, before resigning in 1996.
Following this role, he started working for The New yorker. One of his first assignments in this role was to write a fashion piece… out of his comfort zone, Malcolm decided to write about a man who produced t-shirts. He said he found this more interesting to write. By defying social norms, this is where Malcolm hit a turning point in his career to be different and stand out as a writer. After this, he made it his mission to write something that his readers would remember. Shortly after, in 1996, he wrote two articles called ‘The Tipping Point’ and ‘The Coolhunt’ which catapulted him to fame.
Four years after the publication of these two articles in 2000, the very same articles formed the basis of his first book ‘The Tipping Point’. Over the span of his career, Malcolm went on to write a total of 6 books, 5 of which reached the New York Times Bestsellers list!
Two years later, in 2002, Malcolm published another game-changing article which was based on the ‘Talent Myth’ concept. This highlighted and explained key techniques in which successful people rely upon daily. It wasn’t until 2005 when he published his second book ‘Blink’.
After this, his work in terms of novel publications flourished. He wrote his 3rd book soon after which describes his personal journal of success and inspirations. Shortly before he published What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures, his 4th book. This was compiled of his most popular writing from his time at The New Yorker.
His writing career continues into the present day, with his most recent work being published in 2019. In addition to this, his writing career has expanded into script writing and screenplay.
