Atul Gawande born 5th November, 1965. An American surgeon, researcher for public health and writer. On the 20th of June 2018, he became the CEO of Haven, a healthcare venture, owned by JP Morgan Chase, Amazon and Berkshire up until May 2020.

Atul Gawande is most known for his public health research and books in the medicine and public health genre. His most popular books are Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science and Better: A Surgeon’s Notes on Performance, published in 2002 and 2007 respectively.

Atul Gawande Personal History

Atul Gawande, born in New York in Brooklyn, both his parents immigrated from India to the United States, they are both doctors. Soon after, Gawande and his family moved to Athens in Ohio, this is where he and his sibling grew up. In 1983, Atul graduated from Athens High School.

In 1987, Gawande graduated from Stanford University with a biology and political science bachelors degree. Then in 1989, in Oxford he earned a Master of Arts in Philosophy, Politics and Economics as a Rhodes Scholar from Balliol College. Gawande is extremely well educated, in 1995, he then graduated from Harvard Medical School with a Doctor of Medicine and in 1999 from the Harvard School of Public Health he gained a Master of Public Health. Next, in 2003, he again studied at Harvard completing his training for surgical residency.

Soon after Gawnade began his postgraduate medicine training, a friend of his asked him if he would contribute towards an online magazine. His pieces of writing about a surgical resident’s life caught interest from The New Yorker, many of his pieces of writing were then published by them and in 1998, The New yorker made a member of the staff writing team.

Atul Gawande Professional Career

2009 was a momentous moment for Gawande’s writing career, when his New Yorker essay which talked about a comparison between the health care in two Texas towns highlighting why the health care in one town was more expensive to another. The article became very popular and was even cited by President Barack Obama during his attempt at getting legislation reformed for health care. An American investor Warren Buffet sent Gawande $40,000 for his engaging article which he then donated to Brigham and Women’s Hospital Center for Surgery and Public Health. In addition, he has published different studies on several topics including medicine errors and techniques for military surgery.

Gawande’s first book was published in 2002 called Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science. This book was a finalist for the National Book Awards and published in more than 100 countries.

Better: A Surgeon’s Notes on Performance, this was his second book and published in 2007. It talks about ingenuity, doing right and diligence which Gawande considers important for the success within medicine.

Gawande’s third book was published in 2009 called The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right. This discusses why pre-planning an organisation is important in the world and in medicine. In 2010, this book reached the nonfiction bestseller list for The New York Times.

In 2014, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, this became a bestseller for the New York Times. It discusses medical procedure effects for ill people and end of life decisions related to assisted living. It challenges several traditional notions about medicine roles.
Atul Gawande has many recognisable achievements. The most popular include;

He has attended several bookstore events, such as Harvard Book store where he spoke about his engaging and interesting research and latest books.

Gawande talks in several different TED talks, he explores the way in which doctors can drastically improve their practices using different approaches such as a simple checklist or coaching methods.one TED talk was named “How Do We Heal Medicine?”.
