Marie Kondō, known also as Konmari, is an organising consultant. The 35 year old was born on 9th of October 1984, she is a well known author in the United States and the United Kingdom as well as a TV show host.
Marie Kondō is most known for her books on organising. Her most popular books are The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (2011) and joy at work: organising your professional life (2020). In 2015, Marie Kondō was listed as one of the “100 most influential people” in the Times.

Marie Kondō Personal History
Marie Kondō was born in Japan and grew up there. She has had a keen interest in organising from a young age. During junior school she was the bookshelf manager and spent her time organising and sorting out the bookshelves. She was focused on what she could throw out to make things look more organised however, one day she fainted and when she became conscious again she had the realisation that she should not be throwing things out. But rather finding things to keep and identifying what makes you happy, Marie Kondō stated this was the work of tidying.
At a shinto shrine, Kondo was an attendant maiden for five years. Then, when she was 19 years old and a student studying sociology at a woman’s Christian university in Tokyo, she founded her tidying consulting business. During her senior year, Kondos thesis was titled, “Tidying up as seen from the perspective of gender”.
In 2012, Marie Kondō married Takumi Kawahara in Tokyo. When they met Kawahara was working in Osaka as sales and marketing support. However, he soon became Kondos manager when her career escalated. Soon after they moved to San Francisco, they now have two daughters, Miko and Satsuki and have lived in Los Angeles, California since 2019.

Kondo has written several books on the topic of organising, collectively millions of copies of these books have sold all over the world. These books have been translated from japanese into multiple other languages such as Chinese. English, Swedish and Korean and sold in over 30 countries.
On Netflix in 2019, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo was released and this increased the promotion of Kondos methods especially in the United Kingdom and United States. Kondo also has her own lifestyle brand, KonMari. This brand offers services, content and products which are designed to help people organise their home and life. The platform is also used to connect and support others on their tidying journeys.
The KonMari procedure is Kondos procedure of organising, it consists of gathering all of your belongings and then only keeping things which spark joy and then deciding on a place for everything. This method is partially inspired by the religion of Shinto.
Over her career, Marie has been featured in The Wall street journal,The New York Times, The London Times, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, The Ellen Show and Vogue. She has also appeared on major Japanese TV and radio programs. Another achievement of Marie Kodo is that she has been named one of the hundred Most Influential People in the world in the Times magazine. In addition, kondo was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding Host for a reality or competition programme Tidying up with Marie Kondo.
Marie Kondō Teaching and Events
Even with the international success of Maries books, Netflix series and KonMari brand, it doesn’t stop there. KonMari Consultants help you to tidy your own home utilising the KonMari procedure, these consultants are officially certified. The consultants range on different levels, the highest level is the certified master has around 1500 tidying hours and two clients completing their tidying festival. The lowest level is the certified green with 30 tidying hours and one client who has completed in their tidying festival.
Marie Kondo also holds different events such as the virtual course for consultant certification in September 2020. This course costs $,2000 and lasts 4 hours and 15 minutes with a capacity of no more than 125 attendees.
