Susan Cain Personal History
Susan Cain is American born and bred, living her early years and most of her life in the United States with her family. After a normal high school experience with respectable grades, Susan went on to study English at Princeton University where she graduated with an A.B. in 1989. For her final piece she wrote a thesis based on Thomas Stearns Eliot and Wyndham Lewis. She then went on to study Law at Harvard Law School where she earned her J.D. in 1993.
Following an impressive and prestigious education, the now successful self-help author went on to practice law for an impressive 7 years. She worked as an attorney for Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, then went on to work as a negotiations consultant for another law firm. After her number of years in the industry, Susan Cain felt something was missing and as though she was missing out on family life, so slowly turned her hand back to writing.
Back in her personal life, Susan is married to Ken Cain and her two children, both boys.
Susan Cain Professional Career
After slowly becoming more involved in writing again, Susan published her most popular book, Quiet The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking (2012). She found her inspiration for this New York Times bestseller from the 1963 classic The Feminine Mystique. The book discusses ideas of Western culture misunderstanding the traits and positive qualities of introverted people and instead disregard them and the benefits they bring to society.
She then went on to co-author a second similar book which follows on from her original works with a tighter focus on children and teens as well as their teachers and parents. Where her first book was more aimed at leaders and colleagues in a workplace situation, the popular author soon realised that similar guidance for those in schools was needed. The book details not only these topics but provides top tips and advice for both teens and parents alike.
Both her bestselling books provide accessible platforms for both introverts and extroverts to experience an eye opening journey whilst being empowered along the way.
Following her literary career, Susan began to provide follow up TED talks on these topics. However, due to the nature of the content and the introverted nature of Susan herself, these talks were a challenge to say the least. Before her first TED talk in 2012, Susan underwent a whole year’s worth of preparation. In addition to this, she spent 6 whole days before her first talk with an acting coach. Once on stage she was an absolute success, her first talk received 1 millions views faster than any other TED talk in history and entered the top 20 most viewed talks of all time!

After her success both on paper and on stage, she announced the launch of the Quiet Revolution which is a mission based organisation aiming to train organisations and leadership environments to be more modern and understanding in their approaches.
